  • All About (Them and) Me

Pastor Ian continues the Sermon on the Mount series with Matthew 7:1–12. We start judging and the application to eternal destinies of others and ourselves. We then continue with how this applies to our holiness and justification journey, including how we are to be seeking healing and wisdom through asking and searching. Then we conclude with how we ought to live.

Do not judge so that you may not be judged. For the judgment you give will be the judgment you get. And the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, let me take the speck out of your eye, while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first, take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s I do not give what is holy to dogs and do not throw your pearls before swine or they will trample them under foot and turn and mall you ask and it will be given to you search and you will find knock and the door will be open for you. For everyone who asks receives and everyone who searches finds. And for everyone who knocks the door will be open. Is there anyone among you who if your child asked for the red would give us don’t? Or if a child had asked for a fish would give a snake? If you then who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children? How much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him in everything, in everything Do to others as you would have them do to you for this is the law and the prophets. The word of the Lord, for the Word of God for the people of God, thanks for you to God, you may be seated. Finally, you may be seated.

Don’t be judgy don’t judge me how judgmental these phrases and similar ones like it are prevalent in our culture right now. It is often used to shut down any discussion in regard to many things. Not just religion, but wealth, poverty, culture, health care, racism, nationalism, and so on. And so much so that it often becomes a method to shut the conversation down. At the same time, rephrase the position of Judge so high that it is a political minefield that can make or break presidents, senators, Congress people and the judicial candidate themselves. In other words, often when a person says, Don’t judge me, or something similar, what they often imply is that they don’t want you to tell them what they’re doing is wrong or bad. And this is especially the case, when it comes to sin. Up to this point in the Gospel of Matthew judge has a very particular connotation. And that is the end times we might infer about a person’s eternal destination. And this is exactly what Jesus doesn’t want. Here. We are told to not make conclusions about a person’s eternal destiny. Sadly, too often the concept of sin has been tied to eternal destiny. So so much so that people were taught and in some cases, honestly terrified, that if they confessed everything that knew of left church, stubbed their toe said a bad word. They’re going to hell. If I say if we say one bad word, we’re going to hell, huh? What if it’s that little kid who steals a piece of gum or if you think that or if you’re old, old school Nazarene, a single cigarette, a drink, a dance, a movie, and so forth. It is not that weird to look to Scripture at the scriptures ourselves, society and discern what is God honoring or not we are to do that we are called to do so. What we are not called to do, however, is to be convinced that another person’s eternal destination is hell. Nor are we to actually consider whether their eternal destination is heaven. It is not about security or trust in our salvation. But we do not know how Jesus who has been given the judgment seat will judge another’s eternal destination. It is Jesus’s judgment seat, not ours. We can say however, we believe that some acts are against God’s desires for people. It seems obvious and yet there’s a humility to this statement. We believe allows, shall we say some breathing room and this is incredibly important with this church body to the church bodies and and their people here and Enoch law and to all our respective denominations than to the world Through wrestling with the Scriptures along with wrestling of others, I have come to certain collusion conclusions myself. On the other hand, others have done their own wrestling’s also along with the wrestling’s of others, and they’ve come to different conclusions. In our community, there are a number of Christian churches. Pastor Joanie, and I view them as our peers. Amazingly enough, we don’t all agree on the same theology. And actually, sometimes we might not even agree what constitutes sin. A simple example is that last week, a famous preacher said that drinking coffee in church is a sin.

Yeah, so I was drinking tea earlier. So I mean, what about water, tea or something else? Is it then gum or a mint? I mean, you know, if you’re chewing gum, please swallow it or spit it out in the garbage can please do not stick underneath the seats. You might think these are small things. But it is amazing the number of people who seem to seriously be saying that, yes, drinking coffee in church is a hell bound sin. And I watched the conversation. And I was honestly appalled at the theology of many pastors. Did I understand this past famous pastors intent was that he was trying to reestablish the fact the sanctuary, the place where we gather to worship our God together, where we listened to his word that it’s supposed to be sacred. Yes, I understood that. Is it dishonouring God to drink coffee in the sanctuary? Maybe. But then again, what about the candle or the lights or the piano or the microphones or even singing and for those of you who are not aware, there are denominations whose theology is you do not sing, you do not have instruments. So, these are not these are things that are truly have divided the church. So people argue over these things. And yes, sin was brought into these arguments. And while Jesus is really using exaggeration when he’s talking about specs, and logs, he is continuing his take on judging others. Another way to think of it is this ungenerous, judging by US may lead to ungenerous judging of us, by God. I want you to read that. It goes, it ties back to what we’ve done in the Lord’s Prayer. When you forgive others, your heavenly Father will forgive you. There is a tie here. That is rather distressing, I mean, Jesus, there are many times Jesus things that Jesus says that just don’t mesh well with the ways of thought in which we have been trained in Western Christianity, while God’s grace is unfathomable, and while the gift of God’s salvation is free to accept, and while we cannot earn our salvation through works, there do still seem to be some requirements of us. The first one, as I said, goes with the Lord’s Prayer where Jesus tides, God’s forgiveness of us to our forgiving of others. And now we have here we have Jesus saying, that assuming or judging a person’s eternal destination is tied to our own eternal destination. We don’t know another person’s starting point with a relationship with God. This is the underlying issue. Yes, a person person’s behavior or decisions may well be sinful. I’m not talking about that. This does not mean that we know how judge how God will judge them. At the end. Paul wrote, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, they are now justified by his grace is a gift that a redemption that is in Christ Jesus. We have been taught, especially as the spiritual children of the Reformation that we are just a FIDE by grace through faith. This passage is one of those that is used to support that thinking. And Paul’s use of the word gift though, is often skipped over, even by me. So, I can’t believe I’m actually bringing this topic up. Christmas is only a few months away. One of the things that we do as part of our celebratory observation of it is, well, we give gifts. Does everybody get the same gift? Nope. I have a friend who has an identical twin. He has identical twins as children. They did not get identical gifts. Maybe okay, maybe the matching clothes these, you know, his parents do when they’re first you know, they’re cute. I mean, I remember when we had the twins, you know, Noah and sai would have the same outfit but with slightly different colors. Things you do, as a parent are just weird. But my friend, you know with his identical twin daughters, he did his best to accommodate their desires, even as biologically different as being as even though they are biologically identical. Identical twins are yet individual. So why then should we assume that God gives us the identical gift of justification? As a baseline? Yes, it is quite, it’s quite the same insofar as justification itself before God. It is also quite possible different again, because each of us have a different starting point for our relationship with God. Reality is that we are told to hold each other accountable. Starting with ourselves. We cannot assume that’s our justification and somebody else’s justification are the same. We must be ever wearing ever searching ourselves as to what is blinding us, including our relationships with God, our relationships with each others and our ability to see ourselves clearly. Rationalizing or excusing our sins and our failures is a form of blindness. This is the plank, or the log in your eye. I don’t know how many of you remember the mythological creature, the Cyclops, but they only have one eye. When we are spiritual Cyclops, we don’t know that we have two eyes. Because one eye is blocked from our perception and awareness. However, we can see the two eyes of the other person. And we see that speck in their eyes and we want to fix it. But they see that we are completely blind and the other one eye. Why would they want us to touch them? It’s just a different way of thinking about it. For those of you who have purchased or bought a home, what is oft repeated word, what’s the often repeated word that goes along with it? selling a home buying a home, what’s the word? There’s the other one. What’s a real estate agent gonna say to you? Wow, location, location, location. It’s all about the location. So to it is with it with the scriptures. The next verse is seems not to belong, in fact, because if you hold but if you hold to the true inspiration of scriptures by the Holy Spirit, then it isn’t just plopped in there. I really read commentators go, oh, Matthew, just put that in there and like, huh, I ain’t Matthew. And I’m not going to be so foolish as to say, Matthew, just throw that in there. Do not give what is holy to dogs and do not throw your pearls before swine or they will trample them underfoot and turn and maul you. It doesn’t seem to fit it here. But one of the problems is we are so framed so most of your bibles a publisher will add these wonderful little helpful headings. And other than a few translations that I that versions I have that are you know, basically it’s one huge long spiel. This has got its own little header. Yeah, it doesn’t belong there. This verse is nested into here on purpose. And it does actually have something to do with Jesus what Jesus is saying. Our understanding of part of our problem is our understanding of dogs is complete. We different, we have these things called pets. And they are a fundamental part of our culture and our thinking. So when we think of dogs, we’re like, Oh, get it. It’s a dog. We’re not talking about family dogs, even my weird one. We’re talking about wild. You might even say rabid dogs. There were dogs that hung around places like the temple, where meat and bones were, and wrestled and competed for meat scraps and bones. They’re nasty, vicious creatures.

And sometimes there would even be, you know, the requirement for an animal brought in for sacrifice had to be blemish free. Well, guess what that means the priests could go. Yeah, not so much. So the priests would go toss it right out the door, and boy, those dogs were happy.

Because of the location of dogs in the general context of Jesus’s words, it is likely Jesus is in fact talking about these temple sacrifices, the temporal sacrifices that are supposed to be pure and blameless. But Jesus then expands them to everything that is supposed to be holy. And then he throws in the pigs. Jews weren’t supposed to be keeping pigs. Pigs were detestable. And it’s one of those detestable is there’s a list of abominations. Yeah, pigs kind of fall, you know, from a Jewish rabbi standpoint, at this point, that’s where the pig belonged. Okay. Now, for those of us who like bacon, that’s a real problem. A pig could never be holy. A pig contaminated anything that was holy, for the Jews. And here’s the fun part. non Jews were often called pigs. That doesn’t, by the way, make us pigs to Jesus, just so we’re clear. But it does help us to start unpacking this verse a little bit. Jesus then also use the word Pearl. A pearl was a precious stone, I mean, we have cultured pearls, now you know, where, you know, they farmed them. But that wasn’t the case. Jesus actually late later in Matthew talks about a merchant finding a pearl in a field and selling the entire field are buying, selling all his possessions to get the field which had the pearl in it. And the the pearl, though, is later on us to talk about. An understanding of what wisdom is, is wisdom and is also a great gift. Because late Jesus then also uses the word Pearl to represent the kingdom of heaven. So if dogs get the scraps, but not the sacrifices, and the pigs are not to get the pearl then an understanding would be alongs. of along the lines of don’t apply the rules of a believer to the rules of a nonbeliever. While we understand that Jesus is the Way the Truth, the life, and others do not the ruler, the ruler with which we measure the walk of a Christian does not apply to a non believer. This does not mean they are not sinning, or are not in danger of hell. Let’s just be clear. It does mean that there is a time and a place we must also be wise in doing so. Just because we have the truth does not mean others believe it to be true. Your truth is not my truth and I hate that phrase. But it’s true. Keeping in harmony went with what I’ve said elsewhere you know the reality is your truth may not be measure up to my truth. They may be very different. The truth, big capital T is in many ways beyond our comprehension. I mean, come on. How are we little tiny creatures supposed to understand a God of infinite? We may hold certain things together as truth. Yet we have to know just how many denominations? Yeah, better hold that truth a little lightly. While all may pivot around Jesus as Lord and Savior. There is frankly a lot a lot else left up for grabs. This does not mean cease holding on to what you understand to be biblical truths. Yes, be open and willing to be changed. Even be open to the fact that there is that no matter what a scholar, a pastor, a family, a friend might say, You will not change your views. Just be wary that it could be a plank or a speck. When the church in the US had cast its pearls before unbelievers, the pearls got stomped on and blasphemed when the church trust tried to give that which is holy to unbelievers, they have been molded in return. This is not to defend bad behavior of either believers or non believers. It is to just emphasize that Jesus told us to be careful with how we treat the holy things of God and the wisdom of God. Perhaps instead of being offended that unbeliever unbelievers proverbially stomped pearls and multiple levers, perhaps, we ought to be concerned that God was offended, that we did it in the first place. We are expected to honor the holy and the truth, especially, and how we deal with others. So much of this is really about ourselves, how we view ourselves, how we view our relationship with God and with others, we must continue to dig into ourselves to find the truth. We must continue to dig into Word God’s words to be neutral. To learn the ways of ourselves and others, we must always continue to pray for insight and wisdom. Jesus even continues with search that search for wisdom with wisdom with ask, search, and knock. I always thought it should be knock, asking search or search, knock ask, does it in this weird, weird way. Asking for knowledge doesn’t or wisdom doesn’t mean that God will just give it to you. Despite the story of Solomon, often it is the asking, that gets us to the point where we gain knowledge and discernment. Because that is where the searching truly begins. If you don’t ask, you won’t search. It is not about us fixing or correcting the world. It is about God healing us. We’re not looking for answers to fix the world. God is looking to heal us. That is our ask our knowledge, our search. What will you receive when you ask? I don’t know. I’m not you. Should it bind your heart closer to God? Yep. If it doesn’t, it wasn’t from God. Jesus tells us that we will find what we are searching for. This is not Bing DuckDuckGo or even Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and Google think they know what you want. But God understands what you need. Will the door you knock on be the first step to a buffet, a party awake, a funeral, a wedding? Or is the door to relationship with God. It is about us asking for and searching for God and the desire to be in a transformative relationship. That trance, it’s not just a save from hell relationship. It’s a relationship that transforms us from what we were to who God wants us to be. You’ll know later as you continue, Jesus continues that Jesus talks about the response of a giver to the recipient. You’ll actually know that he doesn’t say the recipient got what they wanted. Jesus just said that the gift was good. The child who asked for bread didn’t get a stone. The stone the child who asked for a fish didn’t get a snake. We often assume that the child received the bread or the fish, but maybe not. We don’t always get what we ask or search for. If every child got the dinner they wanted every time Well, that’s probably going to be pretty unhealthy. In our family. There was a staple dinner for a number of years. chicken, rice and peas. You know, it gets old after a while. And why did we choose that? Why? Why did we choose that food? Well, because that was what was requested. And frankly it was also most likely to be eaten. Did we have other meals? Yes. Do we have many complaints with the other meals? Yes. bluntly, I still dread chicken, rice and peas. We provided what was desired. Because we chose the simple path. On the other hand, we eventually were able to choose a variety of foods too, because we hope that one day chicken, rice and peas would be a rare meal. Thanks be to God. They are in everything Do to others as you would have them do to you for this is the Law and the prophets. This is not an eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, this is treat each other well. This includes the people we don’t like, alongside the people we do. It includes giving the benefit of the doubt or even assuming the positive when you’re really just instead want to dig into that person.

I’ve heard people respond with this verse with Well, I would never have believed behave that way or belief that I’ve got to admit that kind of response is often a form of self justification. It can also be your log. Yes, you might not believe that way. You might not have behaved that way. But the underlying emotion or driver for a different external behavior may be the same. may explain. I don’t know how many of you are familiar enough with the show The Simpsons. It is the longest running animated show actually, I think now it’s the longest running show period in television history. I have actually not seen it that often. But I do recall one episode where the character characteristic nonsensical Bible that came out of a Christian goody goody two shoes neighbor Ned Flanders is revealed to be a form of swearing he had been sent to a reformation program as a child and was considered cured when swear words didn’t come out even in extreme situations, but nonsensical babble just flowed right out of them. And if you have any familiarity with I mean, you’re watching the titular characters The Simpsons. None of us would want them as our neighbors. And Ned Flanders, you know, one of the neighbors would do something The Simpsons would do something and then then fantasy but a little bit of that. I mean, you’re it and for years you’d watch it go That’s cute. I don’t get it. Until that episode. The swear words are nonsensical babble didn’t matter. The outward expression was completely different. But the internal driver was still the same. It didn’t matter what the word was on the outside. It was what poured out from the inside

we want others to think the best of us. Let us in return. Think the best of them. We have a conflict right now. Imagine instead of killing each other, or even yelling at each other like we’re doing here in our country. We actually thought the best of others.

    Take It To The Bank

As Pastor Joni continues our series on the Sermon on the Mount with Matthew 6:19–34, she asks us to consider the relationship between mental health and spiritual wellness. How does our valuation—by others or ourselves—impact how we receive God’s love? She continues with asking us to consider whether we value God or earthly treasures, and even our prioritization of God rather than earthy things. This then leads us to think about how or whether we trust God and God’s timing. She concludes with how our focus impacts spiritual darkness and it’s impact on mental health.

Tuesday is World Mental Health Day. So we’re taking a moment today to actually address mental illness. And it’s different varieties. This can include depression, or post traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit, deficit disorder, schizophrenia, there’s a whole list. And the thing is, mental illness is not uncommon. A lot of people face it. The challenge is, for whatever reason, we act oddly in response to it as people, we don’t accept it as normal, even though it really is more normal than not. And so those with mental health struggles often face misunderstanding and harsh judgment that might cause them to hide their illnesses and avoid seeking help. I’m gonna flat out tell you, I stand here before you as your pastor. And I also struggle with depression. You might not know I stand up here look like I have all my stuff together. And it’s significant in my life. And it seems to get worse when I’m facing a lot of struggles all at the same time. I’m working full time outside of church. So I have all those stressors adding in I’ve got the pastor in part, carrying your burdens, don’t get me wrong, I love this work. Just want to be clear on that. Simply being a wife, and a mom and all the other things happening in my personal life altogether. It’s just overwhelming at times. And like you might be able to relate to I often also deal with feelings of self doubt and worthlessness. I struggle and as the spiral gets bad, sometimes I find myself literally having to claw to fight my way out of the cycle of depression. God helped me indeed, but thanks be to God, he does not leave us alone during these times. So we are going to deal with this today. And I know many of you might also face something like this, it might not be depression, it might be a whole number of things that crossed your plate, that exhaust you frustrate you, that make you feel like you’re in a never ending fight. And the combination of disappointment and fatigue and all of these factors can actually lead to the worst versions of ourselves. So we become blinded to the good things we are experiencing and focus on the bad whether or not we even recognize what we’re doing. And again, we begin spiraling down mentally. And that spiral can affect us both mentally but also spiritually. As you might imagine, God’s word actually addresses this a little bit. So we’re going to look at how the Bible can teach to this today. So please stand with me for the reading of God’s Word. We are continuing in Matthew chapter six. We’ve been working through the Sermon on the Mount. And today we are starting in verse 19. So Jesus is talking and says don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moth eat them and rust destroys them and where thieves break in and still store up your treasures in heaven where moths and rust cannot destroy and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is there the desires of your heart will also be your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is. No one can serve two masters for you will hate one and love the other. You will be devoted to one and despise the other You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money. That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life. Whether you have enough food and drink or enough clothes to wear isn’t one If more than food in your body more than clothing, Look at the birds, they don’t plant or harvest or store food and barns for your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries at a single moment to your life? And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing. Yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares, so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have such little faith? So don’t worry about these things, saying What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers. But your heavenly Father already knows your needs. Seek the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously. And he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today. The Word of God for the people of God, you may be seated. So if we look at this passage that we just read, how many of you think it’s about money and possessions? Nobody thinks it’s about oh, I got one hand. Anyone else think it’s about money in possessions? Well, it is. But there’s also more and we’re gonna look at that more part today. It’s actually richer than just money and possessions. But I want to start with a basic premise. And this is kind of refresher for those of you who were here last week, I think we all can agree on this, that we all desire to be seen, known and valued. If you’re looking at that, like it’s a little weird. I won’t name names Melinda. Or maybe I will we all desire to be seen known and valued. So the question I guess for you then is if you feel seen known and value. Think about that. I’m not going to ask you to raise your hands. I won’t call you out on that one. But I do want to draw your attention to something that God regularly puts in front of me when I’m struggling the most. God tells me you are valued. You are seen and known. You are loved. And you are enough for God. Okay. And just in case you actually had some doubts on this, I’m going to read for you Psalm 139. In its entirety, the Psalm we we did a little bit of reading from for our call of worship this morning. I want you to listen in here for specifically how people are seen known valued by God. Okay. Got it. Yeah, I’ll put that on there. So Oh, Lord, you have examined my heart. And you know, everything about me. You know, when I sit down or stand up, you know, my thoughts, even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel, and when I rest at home, you know, everything I do. You know what I’m going to say even before I say it, Lord, you go before me and follow me. I can never escape from your spirit, I can never get away from your presence. If I go up to heaven, you are there. If I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the furthest oceans, even there, your hand will guide me and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become Knight. But even in the darkness, I cannot hide from you. To you. The night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you. You made all the delicate inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex. Your workmanship is marvelous. How will I know it? You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book, every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me? Oh God, they cannot be numbered. Is there any doubt that God sees us? knows us value says

God formed us each and marvelous ways. He he uniquely created a span of life for us. That the language they’re actually It’s weaving it, he wove a span of life for us, he beheld us before we took our first breath, he sees us, one of the names of God, which I love comes in Genesis, but it’s Ellroy, the God who sees me, not just the God who sees the God who sees me. He also knows our hearts and our minds, including when we have crazy thoughts floating around that we don’t understand, and we’re grappling with, tells us in Jeremiah 31, three, that He loves us with an everlasting love, a love that led him to die so we could be reconciled to Him. So this, this might be a little overwhelming to consider. My, my younger son when he was maybe maybe three, and maybe I’ve shared this before, we’re driving on a long drive. And from the back seat here, dad, God is so big, that big God sees you. So this is the way God created us, though we are, we are to rest in that space that God has created for us. But there’s something else you need to know. God also desires to be seen, known and valued or cherished by his created people. I don’t think this is a surprise to us. But remember, at the very beginning, in in Genesis, he had created this beautiful garden. And he walked and talked with Adam and Eve in that garden every day, he communed with his creative people. But something happened that we know that the story is recorded in Genesis chapter three, where the accuser got to Adam and Eve and, and helps convince them of two things. First, they were not enough. The accuser told them, they needed something else, they needed this magical fruit that would allow them to be like God and distinguish between good and evil. And it was something they didn’t currently have, and oh, how they needed it. So they were not enough the way they currently were created. Second, he convinced them that they couldn’t trust God. God had explicitly said, do not eat of the fruit of this tree, and the serpent convinced them that they knew better than God. And thus they should take and eat the forbidden fruit. Ever since then, mankind has been mired in the consequences of believing those lies, which still persist today. And we’re often convinced that we are never enough and we can’t trust God. And in the process, the accuser pulls off another win. By believing those two lies, we do not see know or value God. So sadly, by undermining that human connection to God, this also perpetuates the issues of loneliness, self doubt, worthlessness, all those things that are also compounded by mental health issues. And that is where we find ourself with today’s passage. So on the surface, the things Jesus addresses are very straightforward, but there is deeper meaning. And so we’re gonna first talk about earthly treasures, where Jesus says, Don’t store up treasures here on Earth, store up your treasures in heaven. Wherever your treasure is, there, the desires of your heart will also be if we are storing up treasures here on Earth, what are we trying to achieve? Are we trying to be seen known and valued, we might not think about it that way we think of it as I’m going to be happy, I will be satisfied. People will value me because of my treasures. And so the question then is how what makes value is that the size of our car, the size of our home, the kind of clothes we wear, the vacations we take a life experiences we just have to have. That the reality is that Earth’s treasures are things that can be destroyed. And such things destroy us that need to have bigger, better, more, can consume it, and we find ourselves in a comparison trap with others. We become so blinded to the things of this world that we lose sight of what truly matters, and what is that. God and the things of God that’s what really matters. Materialism, the pursuit of things, destroys and distorts our perspective and blinds us to God’s truth. And worse Earth’s treasures fool us into thinking that we will be satisfied with just a little bit more. A trap is that we will never be sad As five there will always be someone who has more bigger better, who will always attract more attention be a better influencer. So if we are seeking these things to be fulfilled, we will always fail. To be clear, it is not wrong to possess or own things. But it is wrong to let things possess us. Okay. So sadly, as we place more and more focus on trying to achieve things, we let corrosive dust fill our eyes, and then we don’t see, don’t seek to know and don’t value God here and a reoccurring theme here. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are told the fixer eyes on that eternal treasure. Yes, we all should have the promise of eternal life with Jesus Christ. But more than that heavenly treasures include good works, that producer righteous character in us. So heavenly treasure doesn’t just wait till we get to heaven and enjoy it. Heavenly treasure starts now. As we seek to truly see God, he will open our eyes to see more of him and what he desires of us, we will learn from him and come to truly know Him. And only as we are growing and developing that deeper relationship with God can we truly value and cherish him. So in such intimate relationship, we will also come to know and recognize how truly seen known and valued we are seeing the cycle here. So Jesus sums up this section with the phrase Wherever your treasure is, there, the desires of your heart will also be and this really comes down to you. Your heart will always pursue what you have seen as your treasure. And Jesus makes it clear in this passage, one leads to death and one leads to life. Which takes us to another section in this passage on the concept of serving two masters. So Jesus tells us, no one can serve two masters, you will hate one and love the other or you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. So those who pursue Earth’s treasures, or satisfaction in Earth’s treasures often think that the things of God impede their satisfaction. I can’t do X, Y, and Z because God doesn’t want me to have any fun. And when a mindset creeps in like this, it’s once again the accuser telling us that God just wants to destroy the joy so God cannot be trusted. The reality is that those who work for earthly things that they think will satisfy, end up hating God. Again, you cannot serve earthly things in God. But those who serve God, who worked for God end up finding ultimate satisfaction in the things of God. And that is what Jesus is articulating. One more point on this section, that last word money isn’t actually translated correctly. We see it as Mammon. And Mammon gets at the idea of treasure or riches that are persona, FIDE, and opposed to God. So it’s contrasting the service and worship of things with the service and worship that is due to God. That’s what Mammon is. This could be money, possessions, fame, status, any of those things that we value more than the Lord. And those things become the masters we we serve, and the pursuit of such things lead us to hate service to God because it gets in the way. So the challenge was such conflicting things that if we’re trying to pursue both, both things, both serving God and things of the world, our hearts will actually naturally drift toward one or the other. And it will give it honor and preference, even when we don’t realize we’re doing it. So we become divided in mind. So this is what Jesus is telling us is that which we honor that which we value, and honor most, will guide our life. Now, you might be saying, well, riches, and satisfaction in earthly pleasures, is something I’m not worried about. Not at all. And the good news is that Jesus likes to be an equal opportunity poker, which means there’s a message in this for you to be start here. This is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life, whether you have enough food and drink or enough clothes to wear, is that life more than food in your body more than clothing. So perhaps the issue instead of too many riches is that you you don’t have money or you’re tight on money, which means you don’t know if you’ll be able to buy groceries or that sweater that you have worn and washed so many times that you can see through it that really needs replacing. You don’t know When that’s gonna happen, and you’re not sure you can get to the doctor because it costs a lot of money, or you can’t pick up those prescriptions because they’re not covered by insurance, and it’s ridiculously expensive. These are what we call Earth treasures. We call them necessities. Right. And as we focus on such necessities, what happens? We get stuck in a cycle of worry. So we are perpetually worried or distracted thinking about these things that are in our brain swirling around. And it manifests as fear. If you were with us this summer, we talked about fear. Fear often leads us to act in self preserving ways. And when we act in fear, we take our eyes off God, we think a Peter walking on the water, he was doing fine for a second. And then he took his eyes off Jesus and saw the storm and began to sink. Jesus is trying to drive home the very important point that God wants us to trust him. When we trust Him, we demonstrate that we see him, we know him. And we value Him. And we also recognize, he sees us, he values us, he recognizes us, right? Psalm 37, four tells us to light yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Three times in this very short passage in Matthew, Matthew 619, the 34, three times Jesus tells us not to worry, this gets in the Greek to the idea of being disturbed in spirit and drawn in multiple directions, which can tear us apart. That’s what what worry does to us, it tears us apart. To be clear, worry, choosing is not to worry. Choosing not to worry is not ignoring concerns. Rather, it’s a conscious decision to depend on God. In each of our concerns. We can be concerned about people and take it to God and say I trust you God. I can’t worry, because I know you’ve got this. Just one year ago, if you were here at this church, you know that we had just been called as your pastors. And just as we said, yet, we’re gonna go, the housing market crashed, and we couldn’t sell our house. And the prices were dropping. And it was we had, we thought we had a house here because we had found a house God is so good. And then it turned out we couldn’t buy that house because our house hadn’t sold. And it was a little frustrating. The devil wishes to distract us with worries and concerns. He kept throwing this at us. It was really hard for us. As you might recall, we commuted for several weeks back and forth between Lake Stevens. But we kept praying we kept trusting and kept our eyes on God. And not only did God provide, but he did so in a huge way you might might not remember that we found a house actually it was a year ago, this Sunday, we found the house. And two weeks later, we moved in. In two weeks, they had to move all their stuff out. We had to get the financing done all of that stuff. And God just opened every single door, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, hey. And I get a view of Mount Rainier. It’s amazing. He gave us the desires of our hearts in a big, big way. And it’s not just that God has done this in my family’s life time and time again, we have stories of God’s faithfulness, and perfect timing. We also have to realize that God is faithful. But sometimes our timing is not God’s timing, and God comes in big time. Sometimes it’s as if God is asking us if we trust Him, not just with the destination, but also with the journey that can be hard. We have learned a lot along the journey. God wants us to give our worries to him, so he can handle them. Sounds pretty easy. But if we are clinging to our worries, we are limiting his power to act. And in fact, to right after these things, these basic necessities is to ignore the fact that God knows we need them. So we’re in essence telling God, you don’t see no more value me because I need to strive for this myself. It’s kind of a convicting point when you think about it. God moves in amazing ways and he wants you to give him the room to work. And this is where we need to be vigilant. Keep your eyes on God and look for how he’s moving the mountains around you. Learn to rely implicitly on the love and wisdom of God and then honor him. Tell him you trust him. Tell him where you see him working. Call it out. without your praise, recognizing how powerful he is and how powerless we are. Jesus wants us to be people of faith. This is the question he asks in this passage. Why do you have such little faith? He wants us to be seen and believing and believing even when we are not seeing. Now, once we have our necessities and even desire satisfied, we are prone to grow content. And we might think we’re all set. And in the midst of such satisfaction, we kind of let this haziness come over our eyes again. Once again, as we’re sitting comfortable and pretty, pretty well. We can be blinded to the things of God. So we have to remember that he who dealt generously with us, once wants us to turn around and use our blessings to help others. Jesus clearly tells us in the context of this passage, seek the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously. And he will give you everything you need. How do we build God’s kingdom if we’re so focused on ourselves and our own needs? We don’t what? Pop quiz time, I know you like pop quizzes. How do we define righteousness, or holiness? Close as Jesus defined it, two commandments

right, that agape love, love God fully. Seek the kingdom of God first, which includes loving your neighbor as yourself. It is true. Dale bruh, Dale’s neighbor came to church today. Building God’s Kingdom requires that we see, we get to know and we value those around us. When God gives us generous gifts, we are called to use them for His glory. And we need to live out the attitude and character of God. That’s the holiness he’s working to develop in us. And this means doing to others what he has done to us, which is allowing God to work through us to move those mountains. Can you can you contemplate that that you might be the the mountain mover in someone else’s life because God is using you as his tool? This is important, it’s more important than us pursuing our own needs. When we put the kingdom of God first, Jesus tells us these less important things will be given to us abundantly. Okay, now, if you have your Bible open, or your memory is so stellar that you actually remembered this passage from memory, you might recognize that I missed this section in here. And it’s not because it’s not important. This is the section about the I like the lamp and the body. I’m addressing at last because the rest of this passage kind of all fits together. This is a random little thing in the middle of it, but I don’t want to miss it. So let’s go back and look at that. Whoo. I think I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m just gonna, I might have mixed up my slides again. So we’ll just leave that one for now. I’ll read you it says your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eyes healthy, your whole body is filled with light. And when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And it will aid you thank you is actually darkness. How deep that darkness is. The lamp is about the faculty of knowing and as generally means discerning right and wrong. Okay, so if that ability in you is healthy, that means we are whole complete spiritually perceptive and generous. And such health results in a bright character. Here’s the point when we are spiritually healthy, both God and others and others will see know and value us. Is this clicking? Are you getting? You might have caught those three little words now right? See no one value. We are the city on a hill that cannot be hidden when we are healthy. People cannot help but pay attention to that light that is in us. However, when the lamp in us is unhealthy. We are susceptible to moral failure and prone to follow evil and this gets at the idea that we are ignorant of divine things and ignorant of our responsibility or do ie to respond to such divine things. So if we are unhealthy we cannot truly know God in the fullness he desires and we cannot build His kingdom when we are unhealthy. In this dark and healthy state, the light of truth cannot enter. We are shrouded and gloom not just in our minds, but also in our hearts. In such a dark and despairing place, you’d start to think of this cycle we bury ourselves, we make it where others cannot truly see know or value us, we cut ourselves off believing the lie that no one will truly understand us. So we must protect ourselves. And it’s the spiraling trap that again, compounds any mental illness that we have or any mental issues. It doesn’t have to. You don’t have to call illness issues. I am not saying that having a mental health issue means we are in spiritual darkness. I want to be absolutely clear on that. I think the church has historically pounded people who have issues saying you are not trusting God. And we look at the Bible and we see a child that was born lame. And people like well, who did the city? What was his sanity? I was like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. But spiritual darkness, perhaps phrased as the Dark Soul of the night. Has anyone ever heard that phrase? It also sets in and when that does, so two comes despair and hopelessness. So Thomas, more Catholic monk, once once wrote that The Dark Knight calls for a spiritual response, not only a therapeutic response, it’s at such points in life that we must think back to our meaning and purpose. So what is our meaning and purpose? Your clothes, Isaiah 43 Seven tells us we were created for God’s glory. This might sound kind of odd, until we recognize that God is saying he wants to be your hero. He wants that first place in our lives, and he will break open heaven and earth to achieve this. And he shares more about this in Isaiah 43. The whole the whole passage in Isaiah is great, but he says, I am the Lord, Your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King. Thus says the Lord, who makes a way into see a path in the mighty waters, I am about to do a new thing. Now it springs forth to you not precede it. I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. You might be in a dark place mentally, and or spiritually, you might have a storm swirling around you. I hope after today you can take heart and know that God truly sees, knows and values you. You are precious to him. Let him hold you as a parent holds a precious child. And that child looking up into God’s eyes, I squarely fixed on Him. God’s got this. God’s got this. So as we consider this passage, maybe today, it’s helping you think through it a little differently than you’ve thought about it before. But I want you to think through a couple of things. A couple questions, really. And you don’t have to write these down. But think through them first. Do you know that you are truly seen known and valued by God? It’s not just something you say it’s not just something you come to church to hear. You are to if you feel unseen, is it because you are looking for earthly validation that does not satisfy? Good question. The next one, before I show you is likely that we will all face a mental challenge of some kind in life that seeks to blind us and trap us. So my question for you is what mechanisms in your life have you established to help you keep your eyes on God? About 15 years ago, I had a real despairing time. Pastor Ian sent me this little song by Leland called lift your eyes up. I don’t know if you know this song. I have this recording now. Because every time I get in a spiritually dark place. I play that over and over lift your eyes up. It’s a beautiful song that reminds me to focus on God. God’s got this for what worries have you been holding on to that God is asking you to release to him. I’m sure we can all come up with a couple right off the bat. And finally, where is God asking you to build up Kingdom treasure this is most important seek first to build God’s Kingdom.

    Inward and Outward

So throughout human history, the desire for fame, authority and influence has been there. Perhaps not starting with Adam and Eve. But well the next generation Cain and Abel Keynes slew his brother Abel, Cain wined the god, that everyone would be after him the implication that everybody would know what Cain had done. That is fame, although it’s probably more along the lines of infamy. But when we use the words fame, authority and influence, generally, we have a more positive, slightly tone, but we need to really think about the negative aspects of it too. Because well, frankly, there are for far too many people out there, both now and in history, and probably very much so in the future, that don’t care what kind of fame it is, as long as it’s fame. The old adage, any press, good or bad, is good. Now pastor Joanie and her prior career in public relations would definitely not agree with that statement. But in the day of social media, especially we see it, it’s Hey, everybody knows who I am, I may be not the most positive person on the face of the planet, but they all know who I am. And we honestly have to acknowledge that, frankly, about was it first Tuesday of November? There are a lot of people that tick that little box and shove it in the ballot box. Because they recognize a name. Not because they actually paid attention to who what kind of person they are, and what even what issues they stand for or against. Now, as some of you all have, everyone’s at least heard of Facebook at this point, I hope. You may not be on Facebook, but even at least heard of it and the term social media. And they’re just weird group within the social media circle that’s called the social media influencers. And I bring them up because they are perhaps not for you. But for those around you, especially those younger. These influencers are very much a part of their life. And most of them walk this weird line between being genuine and being authentic. That’s honestly what makes a good influencer is the presentation and the audience’s belief that they’re being authentic and genuine. At the same time, you have to sell yourself there’s got to be that one thing so you can get a catch. It’s just weird blend. But the reality is is what we know today, in certain circles, all they talk about a social media influencers, but it really is nothing new. Now, when I was young, there was this time in the evening. Probably when I should have been asleep. Where there was on the Nickelodeon channel, there was Nick Knight. Now Nick Knight, now, let’s just say I became very familiar with 50s era and 60s eras television shows. And I loved them. Okay. I like some of them. Some of them are still a little but you know, you’re watching them and and you get the normal commercials. Like okay, yeah, commercials. And then as I got older actually saw the unedited or I should say the original broadcast version of some of those shows. And I want to say Oh, I think it was was it, Donna? Thank you, Donna Reed. Donna Reed. I think it was Donna Reed, but it could have been one of the other ones. You know, talking about the kids talking about the kids than doing laundry and then she breaks the fourth wall goes now for getting your clothes really clean. You use this product. I can’t remember if it was, I don’t know. It was some laundry detergent. So this this television show that influences influenced moms and dads for what their family was supposed to look like. this person, this model, Mom broke the fourth wall and said, You need to use this to do the best cleaning and be the best mom. That was, yes, it’s a commercial. But it’s an influencer because she used the influence of her position to influence you to buy that product. And I mean, I got to admit, it’s not automatically bad. I mean, theoretically, maybe I might be an influencer, at least for you. Well, that assumes one you haven’t fallen asleep during the sermon. Which I know is can be a drying, trying trying at times I get that. No, but pastor Joni and I are, our job is to preach the scriptures. Our job is to influence you to be more like Christ. We are influencers in you know whether we’re really good influencers. Okay, that’s really, thank God, literally, that is way above my paygrade. And sometimes, influencers means we plant a seed. And that seed may not grow for hours, days, weeks, months, years. But we all know whether good or bad, there’s always that one person, or multiple people that crave fame, authority influence, they desire, they want people to look up to them. They want to be on a pedestal. Many may not actually care if you are truly influenced by them. But they want you to pay attention to them, or at least know who they are. Because that way they’re famous. Some of them not even seeking your change, whether good or bad, because honestly they don’t care. They just want to be known. And the reality is we all want to be known. There is a human need to be known to be seen, to be valued. We cannot deny it, nor should we and it’s not a bad thing. I mean, if you look at the entirety of Scripture, it’s God wanting his creation, to know him. But when we are aware of the need to be known and seen and valued we are we ought to realize that there’s a healthy way for that to happen. And then there’s unhealthy ways. And the unhealthy ways are pretty much the brokenness of humanity and Jesus has the healthy way and likes to eliminate our healing. So please stand for the reading of God’s Word.

Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of people in order to be noticed by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. And whenever you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to stand in the synagogues and on the street corner so that they may be seen by people. I tell all of you with certainty. They have their full reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father who is hidden, and your Father who sees from the hidden place will reward you. When you’re praying. Don’t say meaningless things like the Gentiles do because they think they will be heard by being so worried. Don’t be like them because your Father knows what you need before you ask him therefore, this is how you should pray. Our Father in heaven May your name be kept holy. May Your kingdom come your will be done on earth, as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread and forgive us our sins as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us. And never bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Because if you forgive people, their offenses and their the your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive people, their offenses Your Father will not forgive your offenses. Whenever you fast Don’t be gloomy like the hypocrites because they put on sad faces to show others they are fasting. I tell all of you with certainty they have received their full reward. But when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that you’re fasting will not be noticed by others. But by your phone Father who is in hidden place, and your father who watches from the hidden place, reward you the Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. You may be seated. You may remember this verse from a couple weeks ago. You are the light of the world, a city located on a hill cannot be hidden. Yet, here we are. Shortly after that with Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of people in order to be noticed by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. God wants a heart overflowing with righteousness, not us dressed up in righteousness. I’m not sure if it’s luck of the draw, or the God is working on me in particular, because honestly, when you write a sermon, you work on a sermon, God works on you. Yeah, here we are talking about nature versus appearance. Again, I seem to have gotten this one a couple of times in the last few weeks. It’s all well and good to have the appearance of righteousness. But it is of no value without a heart of righteousness. Why does one perform acts of righteousness to be seen or because it naturally flows from your heart. I love how this verse challenges the churches general, including ours. Earliest earlier this week, there was actually a pastor discussion about this sign. So you know, free every Wednesday, dinner, six to seven haircuts five to seven. My initial thought on this picture was awesome. These are great ideas. No, I’m not expecting us to start giving away how to haircuts. Now, unless you know, somebody wants me to bring the little razor thing, and you can just have a shaved head, because that’s pretty much the the, that’s about as short as I’m gonna be the best kind of sharing I’m going to do. But I think it’s great because, honestly, a lot of people, people who would often take advantage of this are those that need a haircut, before a job interview. Or honestly need a haircut to feel human again. I think some of the families who come to our church to get bread, they have a few kids. They might even be able to use a haircut, five haircuts 100 bucks or more. Well, the pastor who shared this picture was pondering whether this was a bait and switch to get people into Sunday service. Others looked at those two offerings, a haircut and a meal. And we’re happy that needs were being met. There was a lot more to the to the discussion, but I have to admit, I chewed on it a couple of days. And I realized this as I was going home. Here’s our little sign that says free baked goods Thursdays nine to noon, free community meal, Fridays at 530. Is this showing our righteousness before others? And this isn’t a small question for me. I remember a number of years ago, there was a church that went to the homeless community in their city, the name of their mission was on the sidewalls of their truck could not be missed. Plus the logo of their church where they showing their righteousness. We can evaluate or judge the church who Sinai showed first for that is pretty much all we know about the church. And I haven’t insured anything else because I don’t know anything else about the church either. So we really actually can’t make a valid decision about that church. We can only pray that free haircuts and a dinner are offered freely and without any obligation. We can pray that through the acts of a haircut and dinner, relationships are formed. Just as we pray for that in our community meal and praying that just by coming up and picking up bread and baked goods. We then we can pray that those relationships become a place of healing and reconciliation, then we can pray that their hearts will be moved to begin a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. But our righteousness is to be for God’s glory, not ours. So if that being the case, what am I going to do about our announcements? Ain’t nothing will change it as needed. But the reality is our Church no longer has the presence in the community that it once did. And the church in general does not have a presence in community as it once did. So what we do for others, even when we share it on social media doesn’t have the weight the other churches do and other organizations do. We want people to know about it. Those who serve the community meal. And those that serve for the bread ministry first, thank you. And I do mean that from the very depths of my heart. Second, I think I have a pretty good pulse on your hearts. You’re not doing this because you want fame in the community, or even praise from others. But the truth is, we’re not Jesus, we can only evaluate signs and offerings like ours, or other churches, when we are in relationship with them. I wonder how many people that first came first time that came to the community meal, or came to pick up bread, expected that we were about to pull them into our worship service. I wonder how many were dreading that someone was going to thump the Bible on their head. I wonder how many worried about how people would judge or condemn them because they have how they were dressed, how they were bathed, were not bathed. Whether it was because they partook in the meal or picked up bread. And there’s really nothing we can do about their fears or concerns. We can only treat them with courtesy and respect and pray one day, that we might be in a place to invite them to join our worshiping community and our relationship with Jesus Christ. We have to earn trust and respect. They must believe that they are known and loved to get to speak about Jesus.

In the discussion regarding that church sign I said the following, I am deeply concerned about the perception of bait and switch. On the other hand, I don’t think we ever hide the fact that we want people to belong to our community. Duh. The statistics for our community meal and bread giveaways are abysmal regarding church growth. I’m okay with that. I know I must be okay with it for the love to be poured out. So that we might at some point, have the opportunity to worship together with them. That, you know, I’ll be honest. That is often one of the biggest Oh, you’re going to try to get them into church? Well, yes. Because we want them to have a relationship with Jesus. But it’s not, hey, you’re here. We’re dragging you into service. So they can beat you over the head with a Bible. It’s Hey, tell me about yourself. Who are you? I know from our community meal that we have someone who well was antagonistic to the church, shall we say?

She’s still may be antagonistic to the church. And not so much here. She doesn’t come in with a frown anymore. I see a smile. Even the evil scary pastor gets a smile. Will we have this chance, opportunity some day? Hope so. But little by little, we’re healing some wounds. We are being a light unto the world. So I hope I just want you to understand that I do not think that we are being a failure, because we’re not bringing in 10s or 20s or even one person because of the community meal or because of the bread. Who knows we could be looking at something six months, one year, two years, three years. 10 years down the road. Gods days are accounted for differently than ours. We have to be okay with not increasing our fellowship Numbers. Does that mean I don’t want us to grow? Of course not. On the other hand, if someone attends the meals and picks up breads and worships elsewhere, it’s still a win for the kingdom. If a belly is filled and a heart gets filled, isn’t that being Jesus to someone? If someone evaluates a ministry solely on numbers, then Jesus’s admonition about parading one’s righteousness before others is actually correct. Is there a time when one stops doing a ministry? Even if it isn’t about the numbers? Yeah. If there was only one person at the community meal that was outside of our church, we might actually have to have a conversation about that. For that as a lot of work for a team of people, for one person. On the other hand, we are called to the person before us, our neighbor, even if it is only one person, another way to think of it, is it for a fleeting reward? Or is it for God’s eternal glory? There is sadly some truth that some of the most arrogant rinche And frankly, manipulative, so called pastors and preachers have brought God eternal glory through gaudy and questionable ministries. Because Jesus Christ was accepted as Lord and Savior, this does not justify a bad behavior or bad ministries. But it shows us that God can use even false prophets and pastors to bring glory to God Self. And to draw people into a saving relationship. That does not mean that we want to encourage it. But it can be done. So whenever you give to the poor, don’t blow a trumpet before you like the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they will be praised by people, I tell all of you with certainty, they have their full reward. But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. So that you’re giving maybe done in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Just to be clear, there is not a literal expectation that your right hand will not know what your left hand is doing. You have a brain, it is the same brain that controls set hands. I and I have I say this because I’ve truly actually had that conversation. But so but the reason that what really Jesus is driving at is here, you have to be so so solely focused on the giving, that you’re not worried about the what you’re receiving in return. Did people literally blow trumpets? Probably not there is there are some commentaries and historians that believe that because there was the giving box had actually kind of a trumpet shaped thing. So you actually, it just gathered everything into one spot that they that Jesus was talking about? Trumpet. Let’s what that is the trumpet, okay. But I’ll be honest, that’s a distraction. It is how people brought attention to themselves. And they were looking to do so. I don’t know if he is, but there’s yet there’s something about this that we need to process. So I don’t know how many of you remember, or have participated in the Susan G. Komen race for a cure. It still remains one of the most successful breast breast cancer awareness events and fundraisers for breast cancer research. However, it was just a blip until they hired a marketing firm. That marketing firm did their job very well. Race for a cure became nationally recognized it became a fundraiser Juggernaut, as such people started looking at things to pick at. And they chose to pick up the marketing firm. You see the marketing firm was a for profit company. The outrage began, How dare a marketing company make money doing its job for nonprofit? The marketing company was canned. The marketing company did its job, too well. But the funny thing is the amount of money that goes into Breast Cancer Research ballooned. I mean, yes, they made a lot of money. However, a percentage that they were taking did not change, the value of that percentage changed. But what that marketing firms successfully did? Well, let’s say it this way. They took a six inch pie and made it into a six yard pie. Their percentage didn’t change. It’s just that the pie got bigger. And what also got ignored, which was fascinating to watch when you looked at the numbers wasn’t just the Race for the Cure the Susan G. Komen Foundation and growing. It was all the other research foundations that also grew. Because of the awareness of one thing. Others were raised up. And they had nothing to do with Susan G. Komen. So there is something to be said, about trumpeting. It can encourage motivate others to climb on the bandwagon to help each other. The marketing firms job, honestly was its clients success, and they succeeded. I was even thinking in this whole thing about Alabaster, which we do twice a year. And for those of you I mean, I know some of you keep forgetting you can still bring your stuff and we still have it again in February. But in other churches we didn’t alabaster March. So you, they put put put the wheelbarrow up front. And it was it was a wheelbarrow, they had seen many years of use. And actually had gone on work and witness strip. So that was even kind of cooler, come out, sat there. And then they played the music. Whatever the music choice was. And people would literally all stand up and marched down the aisle and place their alabaster offering in there. I’ll be honest, I kind of went what? I was newly attending a Nazarene church. So there are a lot of lit are these people doing? And I honestly used to think it was kind of ridiculous. I don’t think it was like, isn’t this kind of the trumpeting thing? But yet, should we not be proud and joyfilled that we are giving to a mission to build churches and schools and houses? Should we be declaring how much? No. And honestly, it’s kind of the reason why I wish people didn’t put their names on the boxes. It’s only a box. It’s okay if you get a different one next year. Yes, there is social pressure to give for alabaster. But on the other hand, if you’re all everyone’s focused on a common mission, it is amazing what can happen. It is when we are all divided in our hearts are divided. And we are not united even in the mission we pursue that the church falls apart. So trumpeting isn’t necessarily bad.

But declaring that you give requires knowing why you declare. Underlying all of this as Jesus notes is the is the reward from God versus the reward from man, Jesus, his statement that God will reward us and secret is a strange statement. Yet many people over the years have been faithful to God but wondered where the blessings were. This is not about the disobedience of the Israelites to the Old Testament. This carries through to today. I’ll go back to a piece of advice that was given to me at the beginning of my pastoral journey. If you find anything to do that honors God is calling on your life that isn’t doing being a pastor do it. I probably get it wrong. Just about every time I say that quote. Because I don’t I think as that time has passed between that initial advice, I think I kind of forget it. But the funny thing is I’ve repeated it many times and I’ve said it to pastors and horrified other pastors when I say that. Yet the hidden reward of being faithful to God in my calling isn’t about the fantastic pay For the great people, the great community, or even about the denomination. It is the indescribable feeling of being certain that you are in the will of God, even when frustrated, sad, despairing, angry, confused, happy, joyful, and grateful. The reward I receive is in secret, because I cannot share it with you. I can’t even share it with my wife, Pastor Joanie, it is in the very depths of my soul. The reward from God is just the same. Now there is a character in the passage that we haven’t talked about. And we should because it’s a word thrown at Christians today. So effectively, to shut them up, discredit them, and basically to allow the ignoring of God’s Word. And it’s our favorite one. Hypocrite. It’s right. I like how da Carson defined it. Hypocrite. A person who feigns or pretends goodness, but is actually evil, and knows they’re being deceptive. This first definition is is the one that is my general default understanding of hypocrisy, evil is evil. There is no argument for me on this one. Thus, the first definition really, neither needs doesn’t really need to be studied any further for us. Because it really is a breed all their own. It’s the other two definitions that are our issue today. Second one is a person carried away by their own acting, who ends up deceiving themselves, but often, not others. And I think this definition ought to be our primary concern. This is where the signs that we talked about church signs from earlier come in. We don’t want to be the people who believe we’re doing the right thing by having community meals or food giveaways, and then cause people to feel unloved and unwanted. While this does not mean that there are no boundaries, we have to pursue consistency and our attitudes toward others from beginning to end. We also need to talk about challenging sinful and unrighteous behavior, which is often our own. This is the other aspect of Christians that people perceive when given a mirror of perspective, if we see only our own goodness, we deceive ourselves, we can only truly talk to others about their sins, their failures, their unrighteousness. After we share ours, the closer ours is to theirs, the better if our perspective is anything other than by God’s grace, we are saved than we need to be better. Because we need to be in submission to God. And it is about our gratitude to God. Third definition and this is kind of a long one, a person that deceives their self into thinking they are acting in the best interests of God and man, and so deceive others. Recipients of such generosity are unlikely to complain. But instead of their gratitude, instead their gratitude flatters and bolsters the givers self deception. The third definition I would say generally applies to the honest TV and online preachers and it might seem strange to call many of them honest. But they’re self deceivers. They’re honestly self deceiving. They’re clueless. They’re not like the first definition that knows they’re evil. And such people again have done great things for the kingdom. But their lies fall apart, because eventually self deception catches up with you. There are other instances when an issue becomes the centerpiece and people glom on to it. And we have us wide ranging perspectives that we that may use common sense or even the scriptures to back up their perspective, especially when the situation is in the church itself. Dividing the church, let alone a wider culture. This is when the church ought to be getting out of its silos and into conversations. Sure, God has given us to each other to keep from going off the rails or being like lemmings and jumping off the cliff. We are not to allow ourselves to be self deceiving. This leads us to our most famous section, or most probably most familiar section for today. And whenever you pray, don’t

fool reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father who is in heaven, who is hidden, and your Father who sees you from the hidden places will reward you When you’re praying don’t mean a meaningless things like the Gentiles do, because they took, they think they will be heard by being so wordy. Don’t be like them because your Father knows what you need before you ask him, therefore, this is how you should pray. So I’m going to actually go past that part

this is not a declaration against written prayers. Okay, the church has been using written prayers. The Jews have been using written prayers. It is not against written prayers, because I’ve actually heard that accusation. You know, if that’s not a real prayer, it’s written down. Now. I’ve also heard from the more liturgically minded folk, oh, those evangelical Baptist Nazarene Yatta, yatta, Yatta, yatta yatta. People who with the extent emphasis temporary Aeneas, prayers that go on. And ah, those are honest prayers, either those aren’t good prayers. Okay, let’s, let’s not say that. It’s about why. What is your motivation? The room that Jesus was talking about was likely the storage room of the house. You know, which we think of closets were like, Hey, I have a closet. Yeah, yeah, there was. And it had everything else in it too. Well ask it sounds real comfortable for prayer, right? Close in, step in, share, share the space standing room only.

I have friends who use their bathrooms this way. Their prayer closet? It’s a little weird. But who am I to judge? The right place to meet God is where you meet God? Did people really pray on the street corners like Street Preachers? Maybe there is little cultural evidence I’ve run across, including from all the commentaries I get to read. But Jesus often uses exaggerated statements to get his point across. So there’s something there who knows, maybe there were people in the temple courts that were like, I’m gonna pray really loudly. And you’ll all listen to me. So when we prayed earlier, did we violate Jesus’s instructions? No, we did pray corporately. As a community of believers who bring their prayers in unity to our gracious God, our goal and desires that got here, which God does an answer, which God does just not as we want, always, while our while our prayers are between us and God, if our witness drives others, to also pray to God, that is good. And I’m not talking about sometimes, you know, you go to one of those public events and somebody leads, leads in prayer, and everybody knows the cultural norms, and just Bowser head and is more of going, when is this person going to stop talking? So the game will start. I’m talking about honest public prayer.

But it’s not just about words. I mean, Paul, Paul reminds us that the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, since we do not know how to pray as we should. but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words, and the one who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, for the Spirit intercedes for the saints, according to the will of God would. So is it about how many words No, is it that they’re written? No. Is it about a heart that groans to God? The why that and what you pray is more important than how you pray. If you’re praying to be seen, especially as being seen as holy, righteous or pious, it should just stop. God may hear God may even respond, but the reward will not be yours. Sounds harsh, and yet people tried to earn the praise of men by their prayers. That does not honor God. It does dishonor prayer. The Gentiles bargain, pleaded tried to get their false gods to act. On the words of prayers are the sacrifices. It was like, hey, Zeus, last week, I gave you five lambs, you need to do this for me and make that person whatever. I did this for you, you need to do this for me. Or, Hey, by the way, I’m going to talk to you so much, you’re going to just say shut up. Now, the reality is, is Jesus had his own parable about the persistent widow and the unrighteous judge? Jesus honors that. But no matter how many words or sacrifices we think we’ve made in our lives, those do not matter to God if the heart is not seeking a relationship with God. That brings us brings us to the last verse for today. Whenever you fast Don’t be gloomy like the hypocrites because they put on sad faces to show others they are fasting I tell all of you with certainty they have their full reward. But when you fast put oil on your head, wash your face so that your fasting will not be noticed by others. The by your father, who was in the hidden place and your father who watches you from the hidden place reward you I don’t know how many of you have fasted it used to be a significant part of the ancient Christian

That’s right. I did it right. I forgot to put a blank. Sheesh. Apparent parently the back front front pew driver. I don’t know how many of you have fasted I used to that used to be a significant part of church culture. I mean for generations, those of us who are which is generally what we would call this the quote unquote low church and I really hate that term. But they often and often opposed a passing because it’s what the Roman Catholics do. As if somehow because someone else who is perceived as being an error, automatically discredits the passage. The Orthodox the Roman Catholic, Lutherans and Anglicans have many fast days, it is kind of ridiculous. How many fast days some of them have? Do I think it might be a bit much Yeah. On the other hand, in our country of bounty, and plenty, for so many, we honestly could do with a bit of fasting, not to lose weight, or because or eating certain foods is unhealthy. But because we often could use a reminder of how blessed we truly are. And to awaken our souls to how content we have become. That has led us into complacency and laziness. Fasting was an expectation of Jesus, you are expected to fast. So in the early Christian community, there was a teaching. It’s called the data K. And it flat out said you will fast now, so and I think, let’s see, thought ahead because the Jews did it. Let’s say Tuesday and Friday, you had to do it Wednesday and Saturday. I’m sure I got the days of the week wrong. But fasting was an expectation. So the public fasting that Jesus is talking about, were either fasts that were not part of the larger community, or someone is acting as if a particular facet was more severe for them. Fasting is not a tool to be seen. It is a tool to get closer to God. And I bring this up because in the last decade or so, the Church of the Nazarene. I know and other Protestant traditions, the low church traditions, there’s been this renewed interest in fasting in particular during the season of Lent, I’m all for it, obviously. But or the inlet being the 40 days before Resurrection Sunday or Easter. People would announce that they’re fasting some faster to Facebook about thing, then they would say, Look at me, I’m fasting from Facebook. No, that’s not what you’re supposed to do. You’re done. But then there’s those people honestly, if if somebody stopped posting on Facebook, I would actually be concerned for their existence because they live on Facebook so much and so if they went silent, I would actually be worried they’re okay to say hey, I’m going to be off Facebook for the next 40 days. All right, cool. But why do you want to announce if a forgive a person forget for ghosts Facebook for Lent? They shouldn’t be out there saying oh, it’s me. I forgive it up Facebook. I’ve seen it and it’s ugly. But it doesn’t matter whether it’s Facebook, movies, TV, sports, books, food, you gave up whatever it was the what and why is really between you and God it should not barring for health and welfare concerns be brought up by you. Even if the lack of whatever it is driving you nuts. Like for example, giving up coffee. I see I see. I would I I would know that all of you have given up coffee. But you wouldn’t tell me that you’ve given up coffee? Well, actually, you probably would. But that’s okay. But my point is, it’s not about what you’ve given up. It’s that you’ve given up and you’re not supposed to really share it. In the beginning of my career in manufacturing, there was this little sign on the poster on a on a bulletin board. That said, in effect 1000 attaboys is wiped out with one failure. It used a different word. So I had to bleep it out. But when and when it comes to manufacturing, that makes sense, because honestly, what, where I worked. One part, scrap meant the entire job was dead. We’d love to lose all our profit. God doesn’t work that way. Thanks be to God. The world on the other hand, does work that way. When we do things, especially spiritual or church of Jesus like things, the world will wipe away all the good with one bad with one mistake, it can all vanish. The whole time we may be looking at how the world is following or judging us. But it is only God’s judgment that matters in the end. The danger of course, is that we can find ourselves in the trap of the hypocrite where we think we are doing good, but we are not. A wise man from a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, said, Your eyes can deceive you. Don’t trust them. Or as the God told the prophet Samuel, people judge others by what they look like. But God judges people by what is in their hearts. We are not to do everything before man, for God judges our hearts. Let us be aware of how and why we do what we do. But always remember that we are to bring glory to God to grow the kingdom.
